About IALA IALA is a non-profit organization that establishes and supports adult literacy, adult English language, family literacy, and workforce education programming throughout the Interlake region (not including the Selkirk area). A regional board looks after the overall direction of IALA, financial management, polices and procedures, staffing, and selection of program locations. Community committees look after local program concerns – needs assessments, promotion and publicity, program support, and volunteer and student recruitment and recognition. IALA gets its operating funding from the provincial government and special project funding from the federal government and from charitable foundations. In-kind support is obtained from municipal governments, regional school divisions, libraries, churches, and local organizations and businesses. IALA works closely with its funders, the Interlake communities in which it serves, and with the learners in our programs in order to ensure quality instruction that is responsive to the needs of adult learners. Provision of adult literacy instruction began in 1992 under the name of Interlake Region Adult Basic Education Committee (IRABEC). In 1997 the name was changed to Interlake Adult Learning Association (IALA). In 1999 IALA gained incorporation and charitable status. Through the years, programming has been offered in the communities of Gimli, Stonewall, Ashern, Arborg, Fisher Branch, Riverton, Lundar, Eriksdale, Hodgson, St. Laurent, Winnipeg Beach, and Okno. Programming has included instruction in adult literacy, adult English language training, family literacy, workforce training, literacy training with an employment focus, pre-training study skills, and GED preparation. Many of the programs have incorporated computer training as a learning tool. Organization (Effective April 2007) Board
